How to write a doctoral or master s

How to write a doctoral or master s I wrote three doctoral theses, and the first two theses of Master and several textbooks. In any case, the thesis or a book would not have been completed, if I did not have deadlines for each chapter. My first academic, Professor Arthur Johnston, I was waed about the dangers of not making the deadlines. When I was working on my master thesis at the University of Wales. He said he had known academics who have studied and read in the library field for years: they do not feel ready to write, and in the end he wrote the thesis. Professor Johnston said he had read and studied for ten years at Oxford, before writing his doctoral thesis. Since then I saw myself - looking for students, even professors, who have never beyond their first degree, and even renew their registration for a Masters or Doctorate of each year. Each year you pay expensive fees every year, send letters to their supervisors to explain why they have not submitted chapters! Procrastination is probably the thief of time. The truth is that we rarely feel ready to act. Jesus told the man of the blade in the pool BETHSEDA: "Make your bed and walk. "There comes a time when we must take the initiative and act. Jesus said before, the man asked a question. He said: "Do you want to work? "The man replied," Yes "- and only then, you could take the initiative. We must have a positive attitude and willingness to remember, before you begin to realize our goal. We want to walk! We must want to have enough evil. And then we need to identify stroke, or progressive measures, in our jouey towards the goal. At the end of each period, we must assume our beds again. Each time, it will be easier. Each time you will be stronger and wiser. And every time we are closer to the goal! The power of God comes to us, we take the initiative in each phase. Say: "God helps those who help themselves," is full of wisdom. It 'like walking into glass doors closed, are located in airports and shops. The gates remain closed until the step on the plate that triggers the mechanism that opens. God opens doors in the same way. It is never open a door when it asks to open a door. You must ask, of course. But after asking, you must believe in him - and yourself. You must stand up and confidence to close the door. When you are there, the door will open. In other words, each step must be done in faith. The Bible has told us, "Without faith it is impossible for God, please. 'It is absolutely true. I tried this on several occasions. Positive and faith - trust - that is pleasing to God. " Then he opened the door of your choice and appear objective. Often, of course, the path to your goal is set up. But the growth is usually upwards! The growth follows a law for the physical development - a point of view to another. When I wrote my D. Litt. thesis (in full-time job as a university professor), I have not set deadlines for the progressive chapters. I was methodical. I was wondering, how many chapters I want to write? Seven? Very good. Then I chose to reasonable and appropriate. I made these dates coincide with the end of university holidays, or periods of leave, or long weekends. I thought that the search for each chapter should be completed by a week - and perhaps two weeks - before the holidays, holiday period or long weekend has begun. This means that I must be prepared to spend a week or two before vacation, holidays or weekends. This means that I have had the leisure to write. I made sure not to have any other leisure activities. I did so, in other words, that the preparation does not coincide with the opportunities. All my research - and read my notes - had to be completed by the editorial deadline. When the time came to write, I have applied the discipline of business. The whole family understood that I should not be disturbed during my editing sessions in the moing at home. One of my girls clearly understood and blocked scrawl a waing on its front door of my studio: "Do not disturb - Dad is WORK. I came to an agreement with me that I write at least three or four pages a day. It was not an impossible or very difficult to work. And I often write six or seven pages - and to supplement the chapter before the end of vacation or leave time! One rule is always time to relax and enjoy with the family. I used the carrot at the end of the handle of encouragement, too. Remember to reward for their work! During periods of leave that has been my writing, I always make sure to leave at night. A moing of work success - four or five pages written and edited - always ensure that a long walk, or free evening with the family was entitled to the full. A well-deserved rest rest is appreciated! All that was - unconsciously, perhaps - was the principle of positive reinforcement that BF Skinner, behavior scientist, has written about. Skinner found that rats leaed the routes through mazes, and much faster when it produces a reward of cheese that is at the end of the maze! The principle of positive reinforcement - or self-reward - was a lesson I leaed very early in my career as a writer. When I was a student working on a doctoral thesis at the University MA College of Wales at Aberystwyth, fish and chip shops were a source of reasonably good meal. As students of limited resources, I have endured in recent days, fish and chips! But there was a Chinese restaurant, too. There was my way of celebration - a reward. I promised myself that the end of each chapter, I want a prize with me tonight in a Chinese restaurant. As I tried to convey these evenings! I would enjoy the pleasure of having another chapter and submitted to my supervisor. I live and enjoy the Chinese meal - so different from the fish and chips - with well-deserved appreciation. (I remember how to take a cigarette - a pleasure reserved for the occasion - the Chinese server always a step forward to light for me. The sense of the importance of adding to the satisfaction!) At any time throughout the search I write and, of course, my goal to improve the viewing lens. In my study at home, for example, I would leave a gap on the wall to hang my next degree. In short pause between bursts of writing, I look and see - see - the framed certificate hanging in space! (And I would be sure to stay in space after receiving!) Each chapter of a thesis - or a book - should have its own strategy, of course. Many researchers use a card index. This is a good system, because the notes on the cards can be exchanged and stored in a shoebox! For me it was a little 'different system that has worked. I used a series of notebooks. Each notebook has its own content. Take, for example, my research for my chapter on the novel by Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White, who make up the third chapter of my D. Litt. Opera Theater and the argument in the fiction of Wilkie Collins. In a notebook labeled "R" I copied notes taken from newspapers and magazines contemporary reviews of the novel. In a notebook labeled 'B', I copied the biography notes on Wilkie Collins. In the notebook 'L' I have collected excerpts from Collins letters written by his contemporaries about him or his book. Pad "C" will contain the notes collected from critical studies on Collins - in this case, the woman in white, in particular. And so on. Then I plan chapter and use my system of references to cahiers code. I want my plan skeleton, with headings and spaces on a sheet of paper. This skeleton plan - the basic framework for the chapter - that would be like this: Note: R = B = L = customers Bibliographies letters C = Ch Plan Reviews skeletal III The Woman in White: Accident melodramatic characterization and dramatic Intro: Plot against nature Sensation Novel in R4 (S) R94 (Lytton on CH), B44 (S) C144 (Set) L18 (Synopsis) A novel Revisers home R9 (CHS subservient to the plot) B5 (Ellis hp), R45 (atm) L9 ( leverage on stage) R88 (S & Setting) C7 (quarterly: calling vicinanza) M melodramatic appeal R66 (Plot & M), B44 (M) B6 (Ellis: better not melodramatic novel Eng lang) R74 (Saturday Review: HP ) L5 (M) R75 (Saturday Review: Th) C11 (F, G) Th theatrical effects R26 (atm), C55 (Th) R44 (Th) C64 (Th) B2 (Dr) C 74 (Des) Reason The dead living earth R26 C5 (Hyder - Gi) R68 (Times) R62 (Saturday R - atm) Cont Contemporary appeal: the romance of the here and now R22 R42 R48 Land intricate plot R42 (literary failures) R63 (Sat R - "mechanical" skill) R68 (Times - serious gap in the plot) Ch superiority character portrait: classroom drama R28 (Marion), R48 (Marion) R29 (Fosco) R22 (Fosco) R93 (Marion), B26 (Marion) R98 (Fosco) B5 (Resourceful Heroine) C44 (Fosco - credible and worthy antagonist) K Conclusion: dramatic, not melodramatic L27 (CD WC) C18 (TS Eliot: Bk dramatic because of chs 2) This is a very simple way to sort and classify raw materials. The titles indicate the main contents of the section and the main stages of the thesis, beginning with the introduction and ending with the conclusion. I made sure that among the items, I left enough space to complete my cross-references to cahiers. I would then methodically for each notebook. If I find something in notepad "R" (customers) that could be useful to refer to my introduction, and then I write in reference to your letter "R" in the first position. Thus, R4 (S) means: See specific R (exams), page 4, the analyst notes on the Victorian sensation novel. In the margins of the computer on page 4, I would pencil in code 'Intro' so I can replace easy reference at the time of writing. (Of course, I would be certain of all the pages of the book). The word-symbol on the left side of the skeletal plan (Intro, R, M, Y, etc.) are the symbols that I have in pencil in the margins of notebooks. In this way, as I said, can quickly find the document I mentioned in the writing of heat! You will see that after most of the references, I also used a short keyword symbol or a word (sometimes short sentence), to refresh my memory: S = Sensation novel; configuration; Land; atm = atmospheric effects; Gi = Dr = theatrics drama; = descriptions or narrative technique. These key words or symbols are very useful when writing. They help me organize my argument. For each chapter in the month of May are set three or four copies of the skeletal plan, each with a different set of references. I still have a "skeleton plan" for referrals Notepad to 'N' - the book where I wrote the notes on the novel itself (in this case, the woman in white). This notebook - Notepad 'N' (novel) - which is my first hardware. All notebooks are my research or secondary materials. I did note Notebook 'N' (my material), while reading the novel, always have a pen or pencil in hand while reading your material. Some of your best ideas come to you and then must be jotted down at once! (Make sure that each note a reference to the exact page in the source novel or book you are reading and to which the note. These references are important when you fill in the note of the references). The point to make here is that this system is essential for success. And 'the scientific method, the true basis for their implementation. Science is organized knowledge. Its objective is the discovery of truth - not only the nature of matter, but in the world of the immaterial spirit. This is the basis, therefore, the results obtained in every human activity - science, in sport or business. With the application of scientific method in my D. Litt. chapter, I used a strategy of proven and recognized. This strategy consists of three main phases: 1. A meeting of all relevant facts, 2nd A classification of these facts, and 3rd An effort to get to their meaning, using the principles of logical reasoning. In my chapter of this strategy was organized within a framework or a plan. This framework, or plan, has been my formula for success. Phase 1 has been achieved through reading and my research, phase 2 was produced from my mobile device connected to the references in the skeletal and phase 3 was reached in the chapter. The writing is easily as a result of previous stages. In achieving any goal or objective, the strategic framework and formula for success - the means, or course, to be followed. When I wrote my D. Litt. chapter, this formula a step-by-step strategy, with the deadlines, it was the scientific method in microcosm. When I planned my route for the acquisition of my Rolls Royce, the same method in the macrocosm. In both cases, the principle is the same. In both cases, progress has been fired by the enthusiasm - real desire. In both cases, the desire was supported by a clear and detailed visualization of a specific target.
